HDFC Bank mobile banking app down for an hour

HDFC Bank, which has been under RBI lens for network outages, had its mobile banking app down for an hour.

HDFC Bank, which has been under the RBI lens for network outages, had its mobile banking app down for an hour on Tuesday. Glitches dragged down the bank’s applications before the unspecified issues got resolved.

The bank tweeted at 12.26 pm that they are experiencing some issues with the MobileBanking App and urged customers to use net banking to transact in the interim. One hour later it tweeted that the issue is resolved.

We are experiencing some issues on the MobileBanking App. We are looking into this on priority and will update shortly. Customers are requested to please use NetBanking to complete their transaction. Regret the inconvenience caused. Thank you,” HDFC Bank tweeted at 12:26 pm on Tuesday. Around an hour later, the bank once again tweeted that the issues were resolved.

As per service outage tracker DownDetector.in, there were reports of glitches with the app from around 10:30 am, which peaked at around 11:30 am.

After a few instances of network outages, the RBI had taken a strict set of measures against HDFC Bank in December 2020, which included prohibiting the largest credit card player from selling new cards. The central bank had also asked the country’s largest private sector lender to improve its systems before the curbs are lifted.

HDFC Bank management has not yet revealed any clear time frame when their systems would be fully upgraded. The bank’s ambitious Digital 2.0 programme, which includes the launch of an auto portal, is also on hold until the regulatory ban is lifted.

“In the case of HDFC Bank, there were earlier episodes also. HDFC Bank has an overwhelming presence in the digital payment segment, in the internet banking segment. We have some concerns about certain deficiencies, etc. It is necessary that the bank strengthens its IT systems before expanding further,” Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das had said in a post policy press conference.

“We cannot have thousands and lakhs of customers who are using digital banking to be in any kind of difficulty for hours together and especially when we are ourselves giving so much emphasis on digital banking. Public confidence on digital banking has to be maintained,” Das had added.
