If you are an ICICI Bank credit card customer, you may get concerned about a glitch in the lender’s mobile banking application, iMobile Pay, that has led to several users claiming that they can view sensitive information of other people’s credit cards on the platform.
Sumanta Mandal, founder of TechnoFino, raised the alarm in a post on social media platform X stating that several users have reported being able to view other customers’ ICICI Bank credit cards on their iMobile Pay app.
“Since the full card number, expiry date and card CVV (card verification values) are visible on iMobile, and one can manage international transaction settings, it's easy for someone to misuse another person's credit card for international transactions," Mandal wrote.
TechnoFino is an online platform that reviews debit and credit cards.
ICICI Bank clarified that the glitch was due to ”erroneously mapped” data of 17,000 new credit cards in their digital channels.
The affected credit cards constituted about 0.1% of the bank’s credit card portfolio and no instance of misuse has been reported because of the error, the second-largest private lender stated.
The bank also assured that it would appropriately compensate a customer in case of any financial loss. The customer should reach out to the bank by calling customer care or use internet banking to block the card and make a complaint of financial loss with proof of the transaction on email/messages.
As an immediate measure, ICICI Bank blocked these cards and is issuing new ones to the customers. The bank has also restricted access to credit card details on the iMobile Pay app for everyone.
iMobile Pay is ICICI Bank’s official mobile banking app. It is accessible to both ICICI Bank customers and non-ICICI Bank customers.
Customers can use the app to manage multiple cards, transfer funds, apply for loans, open fixed and recurring deposits and more.
What should customers do?
Mandal said that since the card was accessible to others, they could have changed the settings on the iMobile Pay app without an OTP or even an MPIN.
“The best option is to block the card and replace it - this will provide some relief,” Mandal stated in an online post.
