No UPI transaction charges, RBI Guv clarifies

RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra has clarified that there is no proposal to levy any charge on UPI transactions.

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Sanjay Malhotra has clarified that there is no proposal to levy any charge on Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions.

Concerns had been raised that a fee could be attached to UPI transactions but Malhotra has quelled such fears. He reiterated during a post-monetary policy press conference that there would be no charges on UPI.

"Is there going to be charges on UPI? Well, there is no proposal before us," he said, responding to a query.

Even in the previous post-policy conference, the Governor had clarified on the issue about UPI’s zero-cost framework. “I never said that UPI can stay free forever. What I said was there are costs (associated with UPI transactions), and they need to be paid for by someone," he had said.

The government currently supports UPI by subsidising transaction costs to keep it free for users.

There has been an astronomical rise in the UPI transaction volumes. As per RBI data, UPI processed 20 billion transactions in August 2025, 34% more than the year-ago period.
