Sandeep Bakhshi gets board nod to head ICICI Bank for two more years

This will be Sandeep Bakhshi’s second extension, starting from 4 Oct 2026; he will remain as ICICI Bank MD & CEO until 3 Oct 2028.

Sandeep Bakhshi has got the board approval to continue a new two-year term as managing director and CEO of ICICI Bank.

This will be Bakhshi’s second extension, the previous being for three years until 3 October 2026.

The new tenure, subject to approvals from the Reserve Bank of India, ICICI Bank’s shareholders and other statutory authorities, will be from 4 October 2026 until 3 October 2028.

So, why not a normal three-year extension when there is nothing holding back from a regulatory perspective?

"I think the board in consultation with the CEO have decided on a two-year appointment," ICICI Bank group chief financial officer Anindya Banerjee told analysts at a post-earnings call.

Bakhshi took over as MD and CEO of ICICI Bank in October 2018, after the infamous exit of Chanda Kochhar.

During his tenure, the country’s second-largest bank has seen its asset quality, governance and compliance sharply improve while risk controls have tightened.
